This is the first of the 7 main chakras & an area we often hold a lot of fear, anxiety & anger associated with trauma from our own, collective & ancestral line linked to safety, violation & abuse.

 

A blocked root chakra impacts us in so many ways such as insecurity, financial issues, feeling unsafe, protecting, defending etc and blocks the flow of chi/ prana/ life force up through the spine & into the crown. Let's awaken this flow & strengthen the spine as we release toxicity & re-connect with Source & the Earth.

 

Twists are one of my very favorite groups of postures. Having dealt with a lot of digestive upset in my life, from IBS, cramps, severe bloating learning yoga twists has been a lifesaver for me. Twists are postures that generally involve moving the shoulder girdle to face in an opposing direction in relation to the hips.

 

There are different twists that target the upper, middle and lower portions of the torso, all having their own unique set of health benefits. Here are my top five reasons why you should practice yoga twists.

 

1. Improve Digestive Function

 

During a spinal twist, you compress your digestive organs. This will cause a temporary lack of circulation to this area so when you release your twist there's a rush of fresh blood that will flood your digestive organs. Fresh blood flow equals fresh oxygen and nutrients especially when combined with the use of deep abdominal breathing. The breath & oxygen can travel further & longer to the places where chi/prana may be blocked. Twisting will increase blood flow to the digestive organs increasing their ability to function and help improve your digestive ability & release toxins too.

 

2. Detox

 

This re-introduction of fresh blood can help to cleanse the cells of any built-up waste because with increased circulation comes increased cellular detoxification. You can also help to move stagnated impurities and gas through your digestive tract due to the compression that comes with twisting. Don't be shy! - let go, relax & surrender!

 

3. Maintain Motion & Flexibility

 

The muscles, cells and other tissues that surround the spine can become stiff over time creating premature degeneration of the spine. Kundalini energy (potential/ life force) gives us vitality and it's located at the base of the spine, working upwards through the spine as we grow and evolve. If this energy becomes blocked or stagnant this will lead to a decreased range of motion, pain, and discomfort that can really affect the quality of life. Practicing twisting postures helps to keep the spinal muscles mobile, helping to keep you mobile as well as feeling energised throughout the day without the usual slumps!

 

4. Reduction In Back Pain

 

Slumping over a computer at the office, slouching behind the steering wheel, sitting in chairs that offer poor back support and standing with our shoulders drooping forward are all things most of us do on a daily basis. All of these habits can lead to back pain as well as any emotions such as grief that have not yet fully been felt & integrated. This can cause us to cause a heart wall & energetic protection around certain organs. Twists stretch and strengthen the back muscles which can provide serious relief from the back pain caused by everyday life as well as open the heart to flood the body with more love & kindness needed for its healing!

 

5. De-Stress

 

Twists are wonderful postures to rebalance the "buzzyness" that gets caught up around the head/ brain/mind from a lack of chi/prana flow from the base/ root chakra (survival issues). They are great for stress or anxiety. These postures will help to open the chest, shoulders, heart and back, lengthen the abdominal muscles & draw more oxygen up to the brain all of which can help to decrease feelings of anxiousness. You will be releasing stored tension in the body as you twist, which can have a positive effect on your mental state. You will get double the benefit if you combine your twist with slow, rhythmic breathing as well.

 

Use this practice daily for the next 30days to shift any Mental, Emotional & Physical blocks stored in the pain body & cellular memory. We all have wounds from the past that affect the flow of chi/ prana in this area. This unfortunately not only impacts the quality of love we are able to flow (give & receive) but also how much light we can share with the world.

 

This exercise will help to open up the Earth Star so you can allow more energy to flow from the Divine Mother up through Earth into your root chakra as well as encourage the flow of chi/ prana up to the 2nd chakra - the Sacral which is the seat of your creativity.
