Camu Camu Powder - Organic
A sour lemon-sized orange-purple fruit indigenous to Amazonian lowlands, camu camu contains an impressive array of phytochemicals, bioflavonoids, amino acids, vitamins and minerals like beta-carotene and potassium. Most importantly, camu camu boasts the highest natural vitamin C density of any food on the planet — anywhere from 20-50 times the level of vitamin C in a typical orange, and scores extremely high on the “ORAC” (“oxygen radical absorbance capacity”) scale, a method of quantifying the anti-oxidant capacities of biological samples. Camu camu also reduces levels of the stress hormone cortisol and facilitates the uptake of serotonin. In other words, it will make you happy.
However, it is due to its complex blend of other natural vitamins, minerals and nutrients that the vitamin C is so efficiently absorbed. Therefore, camu camu is considered far more effective than commercially produced vitamin C tablets
Again, compared to an orange, camu camu has 10 times more iron and 2 times more riboflavin (vitamin B2) which are both important for body growth and red cell production; it has 3 times more niacin (said to maintain good cholesterol levels) and is highly rich in potassium, needed for nerve function, muscle control and healthy blood pressure. It is also an excellent source of beta-carotene, which when converted by the body into Vitamin A, is associated with improved eyesight. Essential amino acids (valine, leucine and serine) are found in camu camu and, as building blocks for protein, are vital for the growth, repair and maintenance of the body.
Camu camu’s anti-viral and anti-inflammatory properties have made it popular for relieving cold and flu symptoms whilst it has also been linked with use for more serious conditions such as diabetes and cancer.
In addition, it promotes the production of collagen needed for firm skin and supple joints, making camu camu desirable for its anti-ageing properties too. As an emollient (moisturiser) it is sometimes used in shampoo to add shine and strength to the hair.
Camu camu is also thought to be beneficial to our mental well being. In The Clinician’s Handbook by Dr Gary Hull it is listed as no.2 for its mood-balancing potential. As such, camu camu could help combat the effects of depression.
Our camu camu powder can be mixed with fruit juices or blended into smoothies, to add concentrated vitamin C goodness to your diet and benefit from the most potent available plant source of essential ascorbic acid, in its active natural form.
